Release of Mathaf’s Publication, M F Husain: Horses of the Sun, edited by Ranjit Hoskote

Maqbool Fida Husain (1913-2011) was a foundational figure in the history of modern Indian art. Born in British India and celebrated as a national artist by independent India, he saw himself as a global nomad. He was an early example of the transcultural artist, open and responsive to the energies of diverse societies, which nourished his lifelong quest for a space of belonging. During his last years, Husain explored his ancestral connections with Yemen and eventually made his home in Doha and was honoured with Qatari citizenship. His life and art form a bridge between West Asia and South Asia, as well as between modernity and the deep histories of a transcontinental swathe extending from Morocco and Mali to Central Asia and Indonesia.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art held an online event marking the release of the publication, M F Husain: Horses of the Sun, edited by Ranjit Hoskote. Abdellah Karroum, Director of Mathaf, introduced the event and speaks about the exhibition, placing it in the context of Mathaf’s curatorial program and vision. This was followed by a talk by Ranjit Hoskote on M F Husain's art and its multiple contexts. The Mathaf publication, M F Husain: Horses of the Sun (2020) is the expanded publication of the exhibition, M. F. Husain: Horses of the Sun, presented at Mathaf in March 2019
